At night, Bang La road is flooded with mixtures of pubs, beer bars, disco clubs, and go-go bars. The place can be jammed with human traffic but it is also nice to sit back and relax with good music. Although there is a heavy nightlife at Thanon Bang La, the place is still suitable for spending with your family since Bang La is just a small portion within Patong and is in fact easy to avoid.

Stressed out with life
It’s 3 am and I am still awake. The rain is beating down hard on the roof as though cats and dogs are fighting up there like there’s no tomorrow. Tired but can’t sleep, cold but can’t move to either turn on the heater or get a drink, stressed but don’t smoke. In a little while the rain will probably turn to snow. Then hopefully, I’ll be snowed-in unable to get to work. I’ll call in and speak to my boss; he’s always there though-never late, never absent, never sick and he expects everyone to be like him. I’ll show him one of these days, I’ll just get up and quit- take a break before applying for another job. God knows I’ve earned it.
Time seems to stand still as I lay here, 3:02 a.m., 7:30 seems a light year away which is the time I’ll be leaving my apartment for work. I gaze across at the dresser beside my bed, there’s a travel brochure open at the centre page, must have got given it at the station the other day. It sits there half folded, half opened-selling its wares of beach life, white sandy beaches and the azure sparkling sea that glints to the skies. It reads Palm Fringed Beaches of Patong-13 nights hotel accommodation… the smiling faces of those beautiful people having a great time. White shiny smiles contrasting the back ground of blue skies and turquoise oceans. C-R-A-P. They are not really there though, Photoshop superimposed. Those beauty shots were taken in some dilapidated dingy studio down in Soho London. No, not jealous. 3:06 already. Just goes to show what a brochure of Patong hotels can do for you…
The whistling cabin noise died down slightly as we reached altitude and the flight attendants continued handing out purple orchids-a nice touch. Between the two bottles of mineral water and two bottles of wine, I was able to knock myself out for the nine hour flight to Phuket. And before I knew it, beautiful palm fringed beaches and golden white sands stretched before me. The hotel resort destination of Patong its idyllic beaches and the sight of tiny palm coves and bays inundating the Thai coastline was enough to make me fall in love again. I lay on a hotel sun bed by the side of one of the swimming pools at the Horizon Patong beach and Spa hotel surrounded by the tropical gardens of lush green. Here was like a haven of serenity set back away from it all- a heaven on earth. The hotel waiter brought my drink to the poolside, the birds sang and the forest whispered as a gentle breeze filtered cool air through the trees like one giant green air conditioner. “Accommodation?” the waiter asked, I looked at him curiously “accommodation?” he repeated. The words seemed to echo through my mind as I tried to speak but could say nothing. “Accommodation?” he repeated. A fear gripped me as I tried to form the words. He tried to say something else but the light suddenly dimmed and I found myself back in my dimly lit apartment staring at the words on the brochure Palm Fringed Beaches of Patong-13 nights hotel accommodation… As the clock stared back 3:45 a.m., the rains beat on and I wondered when the snows will come.

No, the sea and the sand are much more powerful. It is the volume of noise coming from the sea and sea winds that takes over you mind and soul. Once you are there, you are possessed and filled with these sounds to the existence of nothing else. This is the one main reason why beach life is so wonderfully soul reviving-all your troubles are cleared by the winds. Your thoughts are cleansed by the sounds and worries are laid to rest. What else does the sea do for you? Have you noticed how tired you feel after being by the sea? The sea sleep you can get from the sea sounds is one of a perfect dream and one that cannot be simulated anywhere. Whilst on the beach, pick up a largish shell from the sand, put this to your ear to hear a recording of the sea. Keep this shell as a souvenir and use it to relieve your stresses when you are home. Pick up some sand in your hands and massage it into your palms, then walk to seas edge and slowly wade in up to your middle. If you have any skin problems, a cut or pimples or eczma for example, bath these areas with this amazing mineral rich sea water. You may feel some discomfort at first, but after a minute the smarting pain will subside and within a few days you will see the difference. Beach Hotels in Patong – No Developers Here!
Letters from my Aunt
After reading a letter from my Aunt recently, I was struck by the fact that Australia is largely divided into three ways its people think. Some are dead against change, some are for it and think of change in terms of financial greed, and others just don’t care. Quoting an excerpt from her letter, “I think I mentioned before, the vast reserves of shale oil had been located in the sea just south of Proserpine, (sounds like Shute Harbour). An American firm has now done a feasibility study and is prepared to spend 14 billion dollars to extract the stuff. The Queensland Premier Anna Bligh turned them down or at least she put a 20 years moratorium on operations. Big business and the media are aghast, farmers and tourist operators are relieved, everybody else indifferent. Jackie, would you know the area? It is just so incredibly beautiful and everything connected with the extraction of oil so incredibly ugly. The American company is going to appeal (to whom or what?) against the Premiers decision.”
My Aunt is right of course, selling land off at a discount, destroying the irreplaceable beauty of the surrounding areas that include beach resorts, coral seas. All, just to make a few bucks now. Pushy developers, greedy town councils all lie in wait like vultures, don’t be fooled by their façade of kindness, generosity, and charisma. They won’t remember you after they are done.

On the other hand, if it’s done properly and democratically, I can’t see any problem with a development plan that would not only be beneficial to the local population increasing wealth and prosperity, but also helps to maintain and protect the area from other unscrupulous industries. I am, of course, talking about tourism development, not oil or mining. With tourism, nature is preserved, jobs are created, towns, schools and infrastructure is built.
