Top 10 Things to Do and See on Samui Island ? Thailand

In light of its spectacular Andaman waters with their clear water and coral reefs, rich animal and plant life, top-notch resorts and intense party scene, Samui has set itself apart as one of Thailand's most popular resort destinations. There's plenty to do in the towns as well as out and about on the water, underwater and in the forest. The monthly Full Moon parties that take place on a neighbouring island are an absolute requirement for all full-throttle partiers. All of this together makes for a first-class holiday in one of Thailand's most coveted locations.

Temple of the Big Buddha

Wat Phra Yai is Samui's Temple of the Big Buddha, with its signature 12 metre tall Buddha statue. Built in 1972, this iconic temple sits on a little island that is connected to the main island by a bridge. The temple grounds also house a centre for meditation, another draw for inspired visitors. When visiting any temple in Thailand, it's important to follow the standard rules of dress and etiquette which includes wearing long pants, sleeves and removing your shoes before entering the actual temple.

Beaches

The beaches of Samui are its greatest attraction, and each one is known for its own specific qualities. Ao Tong Takian is also called Silver Beach due to the glimmer of its sand and shimmering water; Lamai Beach is a popular family destination in light of the abundant water sports and activities; Choeng Mon offers higher-class accommodation in a remote setting and Chaweng Beach rallies as the most popular among tourists, with its peripheral of exciting activities like Muay Thai boxing and bungee jumping.

Eating out

Nothing beats an evening at a beachside restaurant where you can enjoy a laid-back dinner right at the water's edge. Samui's fresh seafood makes way for all kinds of top-notch cuisine—be it gourmet Thai food or international fare. More authentic and highly affordable Thai food can be hunted out on the streets from local vendors, and in the opinion of the locals, the spicier the better.

Partying and nightlife

The tourism industry has paved the way for a varied nightlife that spans all the major developed districts. Clubs can be found at Lamai Beach, with tourist-grabbing exhibitions and shows to hold your interest. This is also the seedier side of the island with its fair share of go-go bars and the periphery of business that comes along with it. Live bands and slightly more upscale bars and clubs can be found at Chaweng Beach. A more laidback scene is on Big Buddha Beach with western-style ambiance and expatriate-owned establishments.

Full Moon parties

Even if they haven't attended one, almost every visitor to Samui will hear about the notorious Full Moon parties held once a month on neighbouring Pha Ngan Island. Locals taxi boatloads of partygoers out to this island in preparation for the heart-pounding party that rage all night in honour of the full moon. There's a variety of music playing, and peddlers take advantage of their corner on the market by selling all sorts of souvenirs, food and other ingestibles at exorbitant prices. The popularity of this monthly party has led to the addition of further weekend parties to mark less memorable phases of the lunar cycle.

Waterfalls

There are several waterfalls on Samui that many tourists choose to visit. Na Muang Fall 1 flows over a very tall cliff and spills into a rocky pool; while it isn't great for swimming, it makes for wonderful scenery. Its counter, Na Muang Fall 2, is located nearby and is easily accessed by groups of elephant riders and trekkers. Another option is to head to Hin Lat Fall, which is a great place to enjoy a cool, freshwater plunge for a change of pace from swimming in the ocean.

Diving

Koh Samui is a world-class diving destination and the fabulous offshore coral reefs pose a great opportunity for all skill levels. Beginners can enrol in accredited training courses at many dive shops in Bo Phut, Chaweng and Lamai. More skilled divers prefer diving at Sail Rock or Ang Thong National Marine Park, an impressive 40-island archipelago that boasts a pristine natural environment. The ultimate diving destination in Thailand, Koh Tao isn't too far away either.

Daytrip south

If you're looking for an escape from the hectic tourism scene, head to the south side of Samui where groves of coconut trees and quiet Muslim fishing towns have staved off the development that has come upon the rest of the island. It's possible to find a secluded beach to while away some hours, and there are also some unique temples and chedis to investigate.

Adventure sports

Adventure sports are an everyday pastime on Samui. The whole family will appreciate elephant rides in a jungle setting, and multiple agencies can arrange tours. Closer to town, kids will enjoy spending some time at the go-kart track. Samui Shooting Range is located in Chawang, as is the bungee jumping pavilion. The latter sits off the beach road near the Reggae Bar.

Viewing wildlife

The display of wildlife at Samui ranges from insects and butterflies at the Butterfly Farm to the raging buffalo fights scheduled at local stadiums. There is a snake farm, crocodile farm and an aquarium all on the main island. The nearby Ang Thong National Marine Park has wild gibbons living in lush, jungle surroundings amid quiet lagoons and limestone cliffs.

What kind of items can I use to represent things someone could do on a vacation in Thailand?

Here is my basic planner on what I could do:

Day 1:
Go diving at Racha Yai
Includes lunch, dinner, tanks, return to hotel, etc.

Day 2:
Hang out at the beach
Cooking Class at Mom Tri’s Boathouse, includes lunch
Souvenir Shopping!!!
Dinner at Baan Rim Pa Restaurant

Day 3:
Full Day Jungle Safari Khao Sok Rainforest, elephant trek and jungle/river canoe trip

Day 4:
Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World
Lunch at a nearby restaurant
Phuket Aquarium
Dinner & Stunt Show Package Deal

I need things to represent most (if not all) of the activities I plan on doing. I already have a cookbook for the cooking class and was planning on using a small elephant figure with people riding on it for the elephant trek, but other than that, I have no ideas. They can be anything from purchased items (as long as they are available from most stores) to handmade objects.

Anyone have any ideas?????

What are some secret exciting things to do and places to go in Thailand?

I've heard about many places to go and things to do... but it is all the things everyone does... I've heard about most of the well known beaches and going to many markets... But I want to know what is something crazy (and legal) that I can do... Some crazy mountain I hike to get to a beautiful waterfall.... I want to experience life and have a memorable time. So please let me know your secrets of Thailand. I want to hear how I get to the places you write about and what its called. I want to know about a shot of snakes blood, or a place to shoot a canon... Haha something extreme!

So if you could. The top five special places and the top five things I must do! Be detailed! Thanks!

Ko Chang, Thailand….. has anyone been and can recommend some things?

Hi there

My partner and I are coming to Ko Chang in April 2009 for about a week.... can anyone recommend accommodation on the island, doesn't have to be really fancy just anything that's really close to the beach, ideally on the beach front!!

Also can anyone recommend what are the best parts of Ko Chang to stay, ie: that are closer to the 'bars and restaurants' etc.....

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!

Thailand bucket list – 8 things to experience before you snuff it!

Thailand, with its pristine white beaches, pulsating cities and fascinating culture is a dream for travellers – but where to start? Sometimes the wealth of things to do can be overwhelming, so I’ve put together a Thailand bucket list – 8 must-do experiences to get out the way before you croak!

1. Get wet during Songkran festival

During Thai new year celebrations in April, the whole country descends into three days of water-fight mayhem. The streets (especially around tourist centres like the Khao San Road in Bangkok) fill up with water pistol and bucket toting revelers, as everyone gets thoroughly and happily drenched!

2. Hunt for bargains in Chatuchak market

With almost 10,000 stalls and around 200,000 visitors each DAY, Chatuchak is not for the faint hearted! The atmosphere, however, in the warren-like maze of stalls, is unbeatable – wander through rows of stores selling everything from clothes and textiles to pets and furniture as pop music and chat wafts through the market. Arm yourself with some comfy shoes and a willingness to haggle and you’ll be sure to come away with some great bargains.

3. Chow down on some street food

Head on a journey of discovery through the street food stalls of Bangkok (or any other large Thai city), sampling everything from deep-fried flowers to pad Thai. Street food in Thailand is fresh, cheap and fabulously cooked – lots of vendors specialise in particular dishes, so ask them what they’d recommend and enjoy! Check out this video of some of the best eats in Bangkok: http://www.i-to-i.com/campfire/honor/videos/102

4. Live a beach life

Thailand wasn’t chosen as the backdrop for Alex Garland’s novel The Beach for nothing: the country boasts some of the best beaches in the world, and the best beach culture to go with them. Head for the all-night raves of Koh Pha Ngan’s Full Moon Parties or just relax and let the world go by on tranquil islands like Koh Tao and Koh Chang.

5. Watch a Muay Thai match

While Muay Thai (Thai boxing) isn’t the most delicate of sports (it’s reputedly the most brutal martial art), watching it is certainly a spectacle. As well as the grit and determination you’ll see during the boxing itself, where fighters are allowed to inflict damage on every part of the body apart from the head, you’ll also get a glimpse into the tradition behind the scrapping, with fighters having to go through a series of rituals before they get stuck in.

6. Go diving

The sapphire waters surrounding Thailand’s coast are teeming with all kinds of exotic creatures, including clown fish, leatherback turtles and whale sharks. Head to any of Thailand’s major dive centres, including Koh Tao and the Similan and Surin Islands and you’ll find all levels of diver catered for – so even if you’ve never even strapped on a snorkel before, you’ll soon be getting up close with Thailand’s underwater inhabitants.

7. Witness Phi Ta Khon

Each June or July, the streets of Dan Sai in Loei Province, fill up with men dressed as ghosts brandishing phalluses dipped in red paint. Yes you did read that correctly. Phi Ta Knon, often dubbed ‘Thai Halloween’, is both an animist fertility rite and a celebration of the penultimate incarnation of Buddha, when he was greeted by ghosts on return to his hometown. It’s also a fascinating spectacle and a damn good party!

8.  Cruise along the Chao Phraya River

Escape the frenetic pace of Bangkok with a leisurely cruise along the city’s main waterway. Hop on and off river taxis as you explore the golden temples nestled on the banks of the river or soak up some luxury on an evening cruise as you float through an illuminated Bangkok during a slap up meal.

I'm totally passionate about travel, it's been my life and work for a good few years! My travel adventures haven't really been about seeing monuments etc but far more about people and getting off the beaten track. Even in a country that has large numbers of tourists you can still find hidden places if you look hard enough, living and working in country gives you such a different perception of it and more of a chance to absorb the local culture. I would like to share my many experiences and offer a little advice if I can to fellow travellers or anyone who is just about to set off on a life changing trip!

Things to See and Do on Thailand’s Beaches

A beach holiday is one of the best ways to unwind and de-stress away from your normal everyday life. Thailand is one of the top spots to head to when you are looking for some of the best beaches in the world.

A key feature of Thailand’s beaches is that they are all very different. If you are looking for somewhere to get away from it all for a while, you will find just the spot in Cha-am. This is a superbly long and luxurious beach located in Phetchaburi. It will still get busy during the height of the season but if you choose your time carefully you can enjoy a quieter break here.

There is a lot more to enjoy nearby though too, not least the Khao Nang Phanthurat National Park. The mountains afford a different perspective over the beach, although it is a bit too far to walk there. If you have a hire car you should definitely make the journey though.

Another good beach to try out is a short distance south of Cha-am. This is called Hua Hin, and it is one of the most popular ones among the tourists. It is just one of many beaches along the stretch of Thailand’s coastline known as Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Since this is popular with visitors it is set up to cater for them as well. You will see Thais here too though – and this is a sure sign that it is a good beach.

One of the best activities to do here – apart from the obligatory sunbathing of course – is to go on a tour of the local area. One in particular takes in both Hua Hin and Cha-am, so if you were planning on seeing both, this is the ideal way to do it.

You can also play a game of golf nearby and look around the shops too. Perhaps this would be the perfect place to find those souvenirs you promised to take home?

If you want to have a slightly different experience you can venture over to one of the islands of Thailand as well. Koh Tao alone boasts several fantastic beaches to explore, and it also has some other activities you can take part in.

One of the most popular of all is diving. The island is superbly placed to offer lessons in enjoying the waters around it responsibly, and it is well worth doing if you are so minded. If you would prefer to stay on dry land there are plenty of walks you can try as well.

As you can see the beaches are just the beginning of many Thailand holidays. It is up to you where you go from there.
